Our top hangover cures and why they really do work.
We all know the feeling, you drank more than you should have, probably forgot to drink a gallon of water before you went to bed and the next day it hits you, throbbing head, queasy guts, vague memories of the previous night start coming back….welcome to the hangover.
Our short list of top Hangover Cures:
Top of our list is the humble coconut. Coconut water is high in potassium and minerals and so is a natural sports drink. Interesting fact: the Khmer Rouge actually used coconuts for IV hydration when they had no saline, this can be done (although not recommended) because coconut water is sterile.
Another highly recommended quick fix for a hangover is Sprite. Chinese scientists at a university in Guangzhou tested 57 popular drinks (including obvious ones like Tea and coffee) and found that Sprite reduced the symptoms more quickly than other drinks.
The legend goes that Lemuel Benedict, an old New York stock broker wandered into the Waldorf Hotel in 1894 and, hoping to find a cure for his morning hangover, ordered; buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a ‘hooker’ of Hollandaise. The chef was so impressed he added it to the menu and the legend of Eggs Benedict was born. All sorts of variations now exist including substituting the bacon for smoked salmon (popular in New Zealand, Australia and Canada).
Eggs have been used as a cure for Hangovers since the middle ages and contain cysteine which is known to work on hangovers.
Our personal Favourite and this really does work. Give yourself an electric shock. What? Yes thats right it’s an old mechanics tip. If you have ever done home improvements you will probably already have given yourself a few electric shocks, did you notice how it cleared your head? It works wonders for Hangovers, honestly! There is even a guy in Mexico who goes around the bars giving people electric shocks for a few pesos. Its sobers them up so they can carry on drinking. Try this crazy Hangover cure – we suggest low voltage to start with!
Interesting Hangover Facts
Why do younger people get worse hangovers? Ever wondered? The answer… Their brains fit more tightly in their skulls so when the brain swells (as it does when you get a hangover) it hurts more. One of the advantages of getting older is your brain shrinks in the skull slightly, giving it more room to expand.
